Who Are You Dealing With? I'm Vern, a writer, reader, learner and intellectually curious about a lot of things. I think it is a good thing to work with people whose values you share, respect...and are worthy of your trust.
Who Am I Dealing With? Here's what I ask of you. Don't pre-judge me or anticipate my reaction to your project until we talk. While I have well-defined core beliefs and values, I try not to pre-judge those of others. I'm interested in learning why those who hold different thoughts come to those decisions.
Dealing With Each Other... One of the books I edited was a combination of the history of a therapy and new-age philosophy. I always find history interesting, however new-age philosophy does little for me. This did not affect my work. I edited both parts of the book in a manner the proved successful. (This author also was able to take my work on the first five chapters and complete his own editing on the remainder of the book.)
- I was born in Watervlle, Minnesota...think Mayberry RFD. We left in 1941 when I was 6. The relatives who remained, I gave me an appreciation for rural midwest American culture of that time.
- I grew up in South-Central Los Angeles. My friends were a diverse lot...who taught me that people are who they are...not 'what' they are...
- The Air Force sent me to Korea and Japan as a teenager...I learned young to appreciate the cultures of others. I also learned to 'tought out' challenges...
- I've worked in Europe, Turkey, all over Asia and Micronesia...I learned in every place I went...My particular favorites are Spain and the United Kingdom...
- In the high tech environs of aerospace/defense I worked on missiles, submarines, intercontinental ballistics, air traffic control systems, satellite communications systems and a bunch of other whiz bang stuff.
- I worked with and knew Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee on the Apollo Program. I wrote procedures for them, traveled with them and still grieve over their terrible death in the launchpad fire.
- We moved from Southern California to a silver mining valley in North Idaho, bought a failing motorcycle dealership and met a lot of really great people in an entirely different culture.
- I built and managed six departments in a startup computer company and met more great people... I also discovered the personal impact of being downsized...
- I worked for Boeing in Puget Sound as a contract engineer and met even more great people...that work was very rewarding, challenging and good fun... I also got bounced out when things slowed down...which is part of contract work...and life itself... I've worked three contracts for Boeing...
- I worked in research where the task was to connect suppliers and manufacturers...I also worked as sales engineer where fitting the need to the product was vital and rewarding...
- There's more work related learning but the key element is this:
I never intend to quit working... Work is rewarding, challenging, good for personal discipline...and it keeps my brain in the hunt... - enough of that...
I grew up in a functional family...which is not unusual in spite of what I see on TV... My parents were good Christians, good parents and all round great people...my heroes. They married in 1932 in the Great Depression. They raised my sister and I, provided well and retired to more activity than when Dad worked. Mom died of Alzheimers. Dad died first of the strain of taking care of Mom too long. But that's exactly what loving, committed people do...
I met and married Barbara...she was 17, I was 19. We're Christians with strong core beliefs...and a commitment to each other (celebrated 50 years together in June 2004). We raised 3 kids who turned out great...They have expanded to 9 grandkids, 2 great grandkids and other on the way...probably.
Starting marriage as teenagers in the Air Force, we were broke much of the time. We worked through that and stay together through thick & thin..."through sickness and health till death do you part"...was more than a wedding vow. It remains in our hearts. It is with us as we move on taking on life as it comes...
That's background that I thought to share with you...Know your writer...
The Bottom Line: I'm a writer, reader, learner and intellectually curious about most things. I look forward to discussing your project needs...and working together if that is the result...
